Cris Tales – A Love Letter to JRPGs
Cris Tales is an indie Japanese RPG that has been inspired by well-known JRPGs such as, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger and Persona 5. Players will be able to meet the lovable Crisbell – our protagonist, who must learn from the past, and act in the present. All in a way that may drastically change the future for good.
Cris Tales’ Story
Cris Tales follows our young, orphaned protagonist Crisbell. A time mage, who must learn from the past to make choices in the present, Cribells will decide the future of her world. By recruiting powerful allies to join her, our hero hopes to stop the Time Empress – a woman who threatens the future of the kingdom of Crystallis. It is through these heroic deeds, that Crisbell can reveal the True Ending of the game.
Crisbell – or Cris, as she comes to be known – must go on a journey across fairy-tale lands to learn new abilities. These abilities are for both herself and her friends, and will support them in defeating powerful enemies. Battling the enemies can be done in a couple of ways. One such way is that players will be able to send the enemies back into the past (to battle their weaker selves). Another is to send them to the future. Here, the enemies are stronger – thanks to the present choices that were made in-game. However, in this world, the choices made will have dire consequences to those involved whether they are made in the past or the present.
About the Studio Behind Cris Tales
Modus Games is a division that has been formed within Maximum Games. Interestingly, the team focuses on bringing Triple-A publishing talents to independent developers worldwide. They have built offices around the world, including the US and UK. As well this, they have a development studio in Brazil. Modus Games is also a fast-growing service that features gaming industry veterans. From narrative leads to QA testers, all of whom have embraced the golden age of indie gaming.
Modus also focuses on creating high-end video game franchises, through both physical and digital formats using their capabilities. Modus’s capabilities vary from funding, production and marketing, to global distribution and operations. They also work on both physical and digital sales, for any sized development team. Finally, the team offers partnerships that can disrupt the traditional conventions of partnership and can re-define the stereotypical studio-publisher studio relationship.
What Does the Game Feature?
Cris Tales features:
- Strategic turn-based combat. This will allow players to master the timing of both attacking enemies and defending characters. All whilst trying to synchronise group abilities
- Hand-drawn 2D animations that players can experience in a beautiful world full of possibilities.
Our Opinion of Cris Tales
Cris Tales is set to be a beautiful JRPG that sings as an homage to classics within the genre. This is a game that is visually stunning to look at, and with an interesting plotline to follow. It makes sense that the animation styles match the theme of time travel. Here, we can see the stained-glass look to each frame, which seeks to tell a tale. Thus, the compelling story feels complete, despite a fragmented narrative.
As well as this, we get to know our friends and allies as we play. After all, it wouldn’t be a JRPG with a dash of friendship along the way. Players can synchronise attacks, for enhanced abilities, or work with turn-based combat. Naturally, each teammate has their own strengths and weaknesses, which you should use to your advantage.
Finally, there’s the story. Deep and complex, this game is something players will love to sink their teeth into. Battle The Empress now, to save the world in the future – and send your enemies to the past. As such, we’re excited to get our hands on this indie game. And we can’t wait to see more from the studio.
