Captain America 4: What We Know So Far
WARNING: Falcon and Winter Soldier SPOILERS ahead
It has recently been reported that a fourth instalment to the Captain America movie franchise is now beginning development. After three wildly successful movies and the departure of Steve Rogers as Captain America from the Marvel franchise, what lays in store for Captain America 4? This is everything there is to find out about the development of Captain America 4, and what we might expect to see.
What Has Happened in Captain America So Far?
There have been 3 movies exclusively dedicated to the development of Captain America’s story-line to date:
- Captain America: The First Avenger
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Captain America: Civil War
In the first movie, we learned how Captain America came to be super-soldier fighting alongside his brothers in arms to protect America during the Second World War. He had a best friend by the name of James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, who had accompanied him, as part of the 107th regiment, through many missions in their efforts against the Nazis.
Bucky fell from a great height during one of their missions and was assumed dead, only to re-appear in “The Winter Soldier” as a mechanically altered super-soldier. Bucky had been rebuilt when he was found by HYDRA after his fall. And was now being controlled by a series of codewords implanted in him by Arnim Zola, a HYDRA scientist.
Steve Rogers (Captain America), eventually found his old friend and was able to protect him long enough for him to seek help for the control he was under, in an attempt to break the metaphorical chains. Fighting together once again rebuilt the bond between Steve and Bucky, though Bucky was left with many emotional scars after the terrible things he had been forced to do in his years as the Winter Soldier.
Where is Steve Rogers Now?
AVENGERS ENDGAME SPOILERS AHEAD
When last we saw Steve Rogers as Captain America, he was heading back in time to help the Avengers save the world. When he didn’t return people assumed the worst, only to discover that Steve had decided to remain in 1945 to live out a full and happy life with the woman he loves, Peggy Carter.
Steve Rogers’ time as Captain America ended when he met Sam Wilson (AKA: The Falcon) at the very spot he was due to reappear after his time travel, but as an old man. He explained to Sam the happy life he had led, at the end of which he passed the Captain America shield to Sam, with the belief that he was doing the right thing. After this, there are heavy implications of OG Cap passing away quietly due to old age.
What’s Next For Captain America?
Disney+ has recently released a short series entitled “Falcon and The Winter Soldier”. This series has narrated the struggle of Sam – in particular, having to accept the responsibility handed to him by Rogers. Thus, it starts with him giving the shield to the government.
At the same time, Bucky (AKA: The Winter Soldier), was working through the psychological trauma left behind from his time as the Winter Soldier, with the help of Sam. This character development allowed Bucky to open up to happiness and find peace, eventually finding a new close friend in Sam.
THE SERIES ENDED with Sam getting a new suit, perfectly matching Falcon’s suit from the Marvel comics. Showcasing his acceptance of the full responsibility of being Captain America. When asked who he is, he responds with “Captain America”, later telling news outlets, live on the air, that he has now donned that title.
What We Know About Captain America 4 So Far
We know now that the Falcon has become Captain America in Steve Rogers’ place. So, it seems safe to assume that he will be staring in the next Captain America instalment. It has been announced that the fourth movie is being written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. This is great news for fans of the show, as Musson was a staff writer on Falcon and Winter Soldier.
No casting choices have been announced officially, as of yet, for the next Captain America movie. Previously Chris Evans has taken up the starring role in the Captain America franchise. However, with Steve Rogers’ departure, this is extremely unlikely to happen. Additionally, Evans recently responded to a report suggesting he may be returning as Captain America in a tweet, simply saying “news to me.” Which pretty much puts that particular speculation to bed.
We think that if the final episode of Falcon and The Winter Soldier is anything to go by, it far more likely that Anthony Mackie will be returning as Sam Wilson. This development in the franchise only serves to further deepen and expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, along with the Black Widow movie, we are being shown that the Avengers are far from done.
As of yet, the only announcement discussing anyone’s involvement in the new movie is the writers. There is currently no director attached to the project, as Marvel is remaining tight-lipped on the matter. So far, there has been no confirmation as to whether or not Chris Evans will have ANY involvement.
We’re looking forward to finding out more about this exciting new development. And can’t help but speculate on what we might expect from the new Captain America. In the meantime, however, all we can do is enjoy the few facts we DO know.
