The Borderlands Movie Is On Its Way
Adaptations are always tricky for production teams. It’s no secret that some go better than others. This is often due, in part, to what content they are or aren’t allowed to use legally. Though it can also stem from whether or not the teams really delve thoroughly into the original sources – and use them to their advantage. Regardless of talent and legalities, it is inevitable that movie versions stray from minor – or sometimes major – details, however. So, what can we expect from a Borderlands movie?
Everything We Know So Far And Then Some.
It’s been over a year since we heard the news that a movie adaptation of the popular shoot-and-loot game Borderlands is in the works. And what do we know about the Borderlands movie so far? Not a lot, really. Details about the movie’s production have been very scarce.
However, we have enough to know that this film has the potential to be an amazing game-to-screen adaptation. Firstly, the movie is in the safe and talented hands of notorious horror director: Eli Roth. Roth’s worked on numerous titles as a producer, director and occasional actor such as; The Green Inferno, Hostel, Inglorious Basterds and Hemlock Grove.
Secondly, Craig Mazin, alongside Aaron Berg, has written the script. This is an interesting piece of information as Mazin wrote the popular series Chernobyl and has recently been reported to be working on the series adaptation of the post-apocalyptic game The Last Of Us.
The Borderlands movie Cast So Far
Alongside Roth will be experienced actors such as Kevin Hart (Cast as Roland), Cate Blanchett (Lilith), Jamie Lee Curtis (Patricia Tannis) and Jack Black (As the CL4P TP Steward bot – but his friends call him Claptrap). To further tease fans; Haley Bennett has been cast in an unidentified role and is said to be a prominent feature in Lilith’s past.
Fans of the game will also know that several other popular characters such as Tiny Tina, Krieg, Commander Knoxx and Krom have also been cast.
The Borderlands games have a wealth of infamous characters that players know and love, such as Moxxi, Handsome Jack and even Face McShooty (the best mission-giver ever). Just yesterday, Lionsgate revealed that Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Charles Babalola, Benjamin Byron Davis, Steven Boyer, and Ryann Redmond will all be joining the cast of Borderlands. Bobby Lee will also be introduced in the new role of Larry.
Currently, it is believed that Gina Gershon will be taking on the role of Moxxi. Meanwhile, Jakobs, who is Pandora’s idea of a “refined gentleman” will be played by Cheyenne Jackson. Scrapyard runners, Scooter and Ellie, will be played by Boyer and Redmond, respectively. At the same time, Davis will be taking on the role of arms dealer, Marcus. And, finally, according to IGN, “Lee will play a soldier from Roland’s former unit — a new addition to the Borderlands universe”.
The Plot of Borderlands Movie Finally Revealed and Dissected
Here’s what the newly reported synopsis reveals on the IMDB website:
‘Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas‘
Potential Spoilers Ahead of the Borderlands Movie and Games
In the Borderlands universe there live beings known as Sirens. We know few things about Sirens which I’ll note here:
- One: There can only be six at any time.
- Two: They are always female.
- Three: Each one is gifted with ominous tattoos and a mystical power that differs between each of them.
For those who need a little more context as to why this maybe important: Lilith is a Siren.
Another detail to note is that Atlas is known to gamers, not as a character, but as one of the leading weapons manufacturers. So we could potentially find out the origins of Atlas.
The summary Borderlands movie continues. Stating:
‘Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption. Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist. Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector. Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity. And Claptrap, a persistent wiseass robot.’
To those who are familiar with the game, the above statement is correct. This is an unexpected team. The inevitable factor is that Claptrap will somehow be involved, whether the remaining characters want him to or not. He is remarkably annoying. Whereas, Tina, Krieg and Tannis are not all the sanest beings in the universe. In fact, all three characters mixed together scream chaos. So this could make for a wildly entertaining movie.
‘These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other’
What more can be said about the Borderlands movie? After all, I don’t want to give too much away.
The movie is said to be loosely based on the video game. Which, all being well, could be a blessing in disguise to mega fans (like myself). Especially as this means it won’t distract or ruin the ongoing plot of the game. Whether the film is canon to the games universe is yet to be revealed. As, unfortunately, we are unable to determine where this plot would sit in its timeline.
A Little About Pandora
‘Welcome to Pandora, Kiddos’Handsome Jack -Borderlands 2
Pandora is, without a doubt, a wonderous setting for a film to take place. Dangerous creatures, both human and beast, roam the planet ravaging anything that moves. Just see this snippet starring Claptrap showcasing all of the things Pandora has to offer in the 2019 Borderlands 3 trailer!
Borderlands Games 1, 2, and The Pre-sequel Plot
The basic premise of the games is that the planet of Pandora is home to a vault said to be packed full of unimaginable treasures. Vault hunters visit the planet to bear down on its location with the help of the few friendly locals left on the dangerous and baron rock. After unearthing the vault, many more secrets reveal themselves, prompting the heroes to embark on mission after mission.
I hope you understand it is remarkably difficult for me to hold back in this article.
If I had the time, I could probably write up a dissertation about Borderlands. As well as why a movie would be a fantastic addition to the franchise (assuming it goes well. I’m not particularly worried). The story of all of the games put together is a complex but fantastic one. And, yet, somehow riddled with plot holes at the same time.
However, there are clearly some amazing elements from the games. Which, if utilized well, would perform brilliantly on screen. The biggest attribute being the humour of the game. Of course, it’s sometimes crude, gory and a little bit sinister – but some would say that’s just good comedy.
To add to this, we all know that the above actors have all got a wicked sense of humour. So, there’s no doubt that this would factor well into their performances. If you want to know more about the lore and story in the Borderlands universe (pre-third instalment) I highly recommend you give the above video a watch by EruptionFang.
Editors note: At the time of writing, the cast had not been announced. The article has now been updated to reflect the change which was announced on 29/04/2021
