Five Future Films Featuring Female Favourites
Seeing strong female characters on our screens isn’t exactly new, although, it is uncommon. Alien’s Ellen Ripley, Terminator’s Sarah Connor and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft are phenomenal figures of inspiration. After all, during the Me Too movement, it has never been more important to see powerful women at the forefront. Thus, I want to emphasise here the fact that the female lead is evolving including the way movies write and direct women. As such, here are some incredible female leads coming to our screens in 2021.
Female lead films are not without their backlash
Sometimes, not all of the compiling elements of a movie are where they should be. An example of this would be the 2016 all-female Ghostbuster’s movie. Reddit users took to the forum to discuss that the movie’s downfall wasn’t its cast but its writing and postproduction elements. User’s argued that the cast had great chemistry and that their performances were brilliant. Indeed, a new Ghostbusters movie was the reason it flopped and no matter who was in it, it was doomed to fail. Nevertheless, Ghostbusters was a step in the right direction in regards to the subject at hand.
Ghostbusters took four hilarious and talented women in Hollywood, dressed them up in jumpsuits and got them to bust ghosts. As opposed to dolling them up, putting them behind a desk to serve as eye candy. This, to a young girl, is awesome. Had this film come out when I was a child I would have been obsessed. Because of movies like these, young girls can imagine themselves in these heroic, centre roles. Going forward, we have five films set to be released this year with a badass woman centre screen!
#1 – Cruella. Release Date: 28th May 2021
It seems that Hollywood has developed a taste for producing movies centred on famous Disney villains. It was only a matter of time before the famous Cruella de Vil had her cinematic spotlight. Originally an aspiring fashion designer, Cruella (Emma Stone) was ambitious and talented. Although, the world can be harsh and the young Estella must fight tooth and nail to find her path in order for her to reach her goal. In this movie, we will undoubtedly witness Cruella de Vil’s making. From a young naive girl to a ruthless entrepreneur.
Emma Stone has proven time and time again that she is a remarkably gifted actor. This casting will no doubt be another role she smashes. Stone is known for her comedic stylings in movies such as Easy A and Zombieland as well as more serious pieces like The Amazing Spiderman. It will be interesting to see her perform as Cruella, demonstrating the journey of the sadistic villain.
#2 – The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Release Date: 21st June 2021
Now we turn our attention to the sequel of 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard. The movie centres around Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson’s characters from the previous film and their attempt to rescue Sonia Kincaid. Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek, is notoriously volatile, hilarious, and an international con artist. For a movie that centres around two male bodyguard’s this trailer hypes the viewer up for a hilarious sequel with a bigger spotlight on Kincaid’s chaotic wife.
It’s understandable that you may have expected a female superhero to have made an appearance on this list by now. Although, the best actors are versatile and play all different kinds of roles. Roles that might include unhinged, unpredictable, and sociopathic wives. While this movie is yet to hit our screens, we can see from the trailer that Hayek demands the viewer’s attention as Sonia. In addition to Sonia being an immensely strong woman, Salma’s skills and experience as an actor help bring her character to life on screen
#3 – Black Widow. Release Date: 9th July 2021
Next on the list is the highly anticipated Black Widow movie by Marvel. This action and adventure movie centres on Scarlett Johansson as Russia’s deadly spy Natasha Romanoff. Romanoff is renowned in the superhero universe and is one of the few Avengers who has proven herself without having to rely on superpowers. Not only is she intelligent and physically strong but Natasha isn’t a character to let herself fall victim to anything.
Being a strong woman isn’t only meant in its literal form but in other ways. Which would inspire women of all ages. Natasha’s strength isn’t just measured by her physical capabilities but her mentality too. After defecting to S.H.I.E.L.D Natasha essentially overcomes the KGB’s efforts to brainwash and control her, cutting herself free of every string they used to pull. The only note to add here is that Johansson has played this role impeccably for a number of years in other Marvel movies. It’s about time she had the spotlight on her character.
#4 – Gunpowder Milkshake. Release Date: July 2021
This is a movie I’m incredibly excited to talk about. The biggest reason being Karen Gillan (I’m a bit of a fan, to say the least). Gillan has become an icon for women inside and out of the film industry. Originally a model, Karen was cast as The Eleventh Doctor’s Companion Amy Pond. Interestingly, after rising to fame the former Doctor Who star also set her sights on writing and directing. 2019 saw the release of The Party’s Just Beginning, a movie Gillan starred in, wrote and directed.
The events of this movie are as follows. After being abandoned by her assassin mother (Lena Headey), Sam (Gillan) is raised and trained by a crime syndicate known as The Firm. Years later Sam finds herself reuniting with her mother in an attempt to take down the syndicate to save the life of a child. Gunpowder Milkshake has an incredible cast including Headey (Game of Thrones), Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game), and Angela Bassett (Black Panther). All of whom are experienced and versatile actors. The movie is set to be released on Netflix in the summer of this year. I cannot wait.
#5 – Eternals. Release Date: 5th November 2021
Here we come to the final movie on my list. One which follows Marvel’s Endgame revolving around a race that has inhabited the Earth for over 35,000 years. The Eternals must rise and face the wrath of the Deviants. This movie is directed by Chinese screenwriter, producer and director Chloé Zhao and stars Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan and Salma Hayek. So not only is the film centred on some strong and ancient female being but it is in the talented hands of Zhao who also directed pieces such as Nomadland and Songs My Brother Taught Me.
If you don’t know who Angelina Jolie is by now then I’ll assume the rock you’re living under is nice and comfy. Angelina Jolie gave us our first cinematic rendition of Lara Croft, Maleficent, Mrs Smith and so many other famous roles. Jolie is more commonly known for strong leads wherein her character needs little to no assistance from anyone. In addition to this, she has been on our screens for over 25 years. Furthermore, it’s about time she was introduced into a Comic Book Giants cinematic universe. Coupled with the talents of Salma Hayek and Chan, I have no doubt this movie will be well worth a watch.
