Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – A Fantasy Funland
“Roll for Initiative Suckas!!!”
Those were the magic words I needed to hear. Tiny Frickin Tina is back! And the world is not ready for the deadliest 13-year-old on Pandora. That’s right, Tina is getting her own game… and it is based on one of the greatest DLC’s in gaming history – Assault on Dragon’s Keep. Welcome to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
The following post contains spoilers for Borderlands 2 and Assault on Dragon’s Keep.
What Is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands?
Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is a fully-featured game and the next instalment of the Borderlands series. Although not Borderlands 4, this game is what Lost Legacy is to the Uncharted series – a highly anticipated spin-off. Fans of the series will once again be able to experience Tina’s adorably psychotic mind and her realm of the fantasy RPG.
The game is the result of the success of the Borderlands 2 DLC – Assault on Dragon’s Keep. AODK was set after the main story of the campaign and details the five stages of grief that Tina goes through after the loss of her friend, Roland. To deal with this, Tina sets up a Dungeons & Dragons-style game called ‘Bunkers & Badasses’ with the remaining 3 characters of the first game. In the end, Tina reaches the final stage of grief together with her friends in a heart-warming (and breaking) ending.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is set in the same chaotic fantasy realm as before – focusing on TTRPG elements combined with the looter-shooter genre. With nerdy references, bizarre humour, and a whole lotta loot; the game is looking to expand into something greater.
What To Expect in Wonderlands
Badonkadonks! Devil-looking salad! Butt Stallion! Out of context, that sounds incredibly weird, but not for Borderlands fans. To them, these phrases highlight the out-of-world theme of the series, or rather for our favourite child explosive expert. For new players, expect the unexpected new world of fantasy and looter-shooting.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands continues the trend of going beyond anything its predecessors have shown. With a brand new world and setting combined with its own mechanics – players of new and old will be in for one hell of a ride! Senior Producer of the game, Kayla Belmore, has gone to say that the game will feature big nods for the fans but appeals to players new to the series.
Speaking of new mechanics, Wonderlands will feature the fantastic gameplay of the franchise with new elements such as spellcasting and even customising your own character. That’s right; you can now shoot magic and customise your own character to truly be a part of the Borderlands universe.
The Story of Wonderlands
Welcome to the world of the greatest Dungeon Master who ever lived! Sorry, Matthew Mercer, we meant Tiny Tina (we still love you though!). Tina is your bunker master – your weaver of stories, your narrator of exploits, and the one who can TPK you at a moment’s notice. She will guide your narrative and take your cast of characters through a journey to defeat The Dragon Lord. Talk about an adventure!
Joining you is a cast of colourful characters AND actors. Andy Samberg (better known as Peralta from Brooklyn Nine-Nine) joins the fray. He will be playing Valentine – the headstrong captain of your party of adventures. Joining him will be Wanda Sykes (from The Wanda Sykes Show) who will play Frette – the ‘rules lawyer’ robot of the group. And let’s not forget Lego Batman himself, Will Arnett, who will play the antagonist – The Dragon Lord.
And of course, we cannot forget the one and only Ashley Burch! Reprising her role as Tiny Tina from the previous games – as the star of the game. For those unfamiliar with the series, Burch also plays Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and Chloe Price from Life Is Strange.
To quote Tina – “I’m a dragon, you hear! CAW-CAW BITCH I CAN FLY! You get me?” …Whoops, wrong quote, but you get the excitement I’m trying to convey right? To say I am hyped is the biggest understatement of 2021 (and possible 2022). As a huge fan of the series and an even bigger fan of the character, this is a wish come true.
Tiny Tina was one of the first female videogame characters that had an impact on me – her humour, voice and over-the-top craziness combined with her childish youth influenced the way I wrote humour and characterisation. AODK was the perfect DLC for me, even before I played DnD. So to revisit that crazy fantasy world with Tina as a lead and with a newfound appreciation for TTRPGs is honestly the best thing I could ask for.
I will be waiting in high anticipation for a release date and more information on the game. With news of the Borderlands movie (and our star herself appearing), it’s a beautiful year for me and fans out there. Let us hope the hype keeps on coming and the game goes beyond our expectations. I for one cannot wait to see how Gearbox develops this into a fully-fledged game.
