Flippin Kaktus: Overview and Opinions

Arguably one of the best things about my job is seeing fresh games land in my inbox. Particularly when those games hail from indie developers who put all of their love and insanity into a game. After all, lord knows we love to review unique indie games with a crazy hook. One such example of this, is easily today’s marketing shebang for a game on Switch and Steam – Flippin Kaktus.

More About Flippin Kaktus

“You had a life once, a family, a home to go back to. This all changed when the cartel raided your house. Now you’re on the run. No, you’re on the hunt. Your sister Adelita has been taken, your life ruined, and your solitaire game interrupted. Some things cannot be forgiven.”

With a press release like that, how can you not be instantly hooked? If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that you just don’t ruin someone’s solitaire game, damnit. Then, there’s the whole sister thing. Pffft, inconvenient. So, it’s time to get your sister back, flip some shit and do it all in a retro style.

Additionally, players can choose between classic 80’s action-star madness, by jumping over obstacles, avoiding bullets and detonating walls! Or, for those who choose tactics, they can choose a path of stealth and hide in boxes. As well as sombreros, or blending in with a bush. Honestly, I’d be lying if I said a part of me wasn’t worried about the level of stereotyping going on here.

Alternatively, go in with no plan of action at all and choose a path of rage. Meaning you’ll be dashing through doors as well as your enemies. Not to mention doing drugs, eating chillis, and drinking liquor. Followed by a lovely chaser of burning your enemies alive with a flamethrower! Pleasant.

In the words of the developer: Shoot, smash and never stop. Just. Keep. On. Flippin.

Behind the Game

Created by a previous favourite of ours – No Gravity Games – this particular offering couldn’t be farther from their previous release. While Curved Space focuses on, quite literally, gravity and shoot-em-ups in space, Flippin Kaktus is all heart.

Take control of a spiky hero with the thorny past, as you journey on a tale of revenge and action-driven adventure. With the combat styles ranging from drunken rages through to strategy and subterfuge. All depending on how much tequila Flipping Kaktus has.

Of course, when a vicious drug cartel raids your home, nothing is off-limits and everything is off the books. Causing Flippin Kaktus to break bad in a hardcore journey to save his foster family. Reveal the dark side of the wacky 80s punk and flip the switch to obliterate anyone in your path.

The gameplay seems to use interesting twists. Requiring players to pull in both tactics and all-out rage to make their way through the levels. “All thought up and lovingly constructed by a lone determined developer with a grand vision.” the press release tells us. Stating that the game is “A magnum opus from an auteur straight from the Flippin heart of Russia.” And, while that may yet prove to be a touch of an overstatement, it’s clear to see the passion behind this project.

Release Dates for Flippin Kaktus

Flippin Kaktus is set for release in the first quarter of 2022 on Steam and Nintendo Switch.  However, No Gravity Games make it clear in their email that they’re not ruling out GOG or Xbox/Playstation. Meanwhile, the actual date of release has yet to be revealed.

The latest teaser for Flippin Kaktus is currently live. And those who want to have a go can currently play the current demo on Steam. More information about the game can be found on the official website
